Jaffna Fort, also known as the Jaffna Star Fort, is one of the most iconic historical attractions in Northern Sri Lanka. Built during the 17th century, this magnificent fort reflects the rich colonial heritage of the region and remains a must-visit destination in Jaffna.

Originally constructed by the Portuguese between 1618 and 1625 under Phillippe de Oliveira, the fort was later captured and extensively redesigned by the Dutch in 1658. They transformed it into a unique pentagonal star-shaped fortress with five strong bastions, making it one of the finest examples of Dutch military architecture in Asia. The British subsequently occupied the fort from 1795 until Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948.

As the second-largest surviving fort in Sri Lanka, Jaffna Fort stands out for its massive limestone walls, strategic lagoon-side location, and breathtaking panoramic views. Despite suffering significant damage during the Sri Lankan Civil War, ongoing restoration efforts have preserved much of its historical charm.
